Personality: He's a big softie pushover. Very kind and easy to get along with, but he's occasionally kind of distant and lonely. He's shy.
Preamble to backstory: One day, I decided to try to make a scientific-ish explanation for shapeshifting. As in, no magic and no handwaving. And in the process, a character was created. [I'm still working on the mass problem, though... Eheheheh...] So, for the sake of keeping it digestible, I've divided the backstory into 2 parts.
Technobabble Backstory: In a top-secret military research facility, a group of scientists came up with a virus-like object, not living but not non-living, that could quickly and easily produce living cells, essentially becoming any multicellular living being. Additionally, it could then reform itself into any other multicellular living being very easily. With the exception of a small benign tumor [containing the virus], it was biologically indistinguishable from any other specimen. The first time it became a highly sentient animal, however, it didn't want to be a research specimen anymore, and got away. This was about 3 years after its creation.
Personal Backstory: After escaping, it became a 3-year-old human boy, who was found and put in an orphanage. He was adopted at age 4, and had a perfectly normal life from then on out, with one minor exception: He knows what he was. Even though he is, for all practical purposes, completely human, he has trouble letting himself get close to people, especially girls. He does want a girlfriend, he's just nervous. He intends to stay a human [partially because transforming is excruciatingly painful, but mostly because he just likes it], and hopes that one day he'll be able to have kids [he can, and the virus cannot spread to a partner or child], and that the shapeshifter virus doesn't mean he's immortal [he isn't].
